In a new educational reform, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the regulator of engineering courses has announced that Maths, Chemistry and Physics shall not be mandatory subjects for all courses of Engineering. This change in the admission criterion is done in line with the New Education Policy (NEP) that encourages flexibility in the choice of subjects for graduation courses.
Now students of 12th class have to choose subjects according to the engineering course they wanted to study in Graduation. Maths, Chemistry, and Physics (PCM) shall not be the mandatory subjects to take admission for many engineering courses like Biotechnology, textile or agricultural engineering. AICTE chairperson said that new disciplines are emerging and many students question why they study chemistry when they don’t use it in their entire career. Now students who have not studied PCM in their 12th can also apply for many engineering courses. But for courses like computer science PCM are still mandatory subjects.
